Classification
Item #: SCP-[...]; Containment Class: Euclid (Unpredictable); Clearance Level: 2 (Restricted); Disruption Class: Vlam (Localized to a small handful of people); Risk Class: Warning (Moderate to significant effect)
Special Containment Procedures
SCP-[...] is to be contained within a standard electronic storage unit at Site-██. The containment chamber must be equipped with a telephone line and a legacy desktop computer, designated as Computer-[...]-1, which meets the specifications outlined in Addendum D. Computer-[...]-1 is to remain disconnected from any network and be subjected to regular virus scans to ensure it remains free of any malicious software.

SCP-[...] must be kept disconnected from Computer-[...]-1 at all times, except during approved testing. The attached antivirus device, labeled as SCP-[...]-A, is to be stored in a separate locked container within the same storage unit. Access to SCP-[...] and SCP-[...]-A requires Level 2 clearance and authorization from the current project lead.

In the event of accidental exposure, affected individuals should be administered a Class-B amnestic and undergo a full medical evaluation.
Description
SCP-[...] is an early 1990s dial-up modem, model [REDACTED], connected to a standard telephone handset. When the telephone is picked up, SCP-[...] will initiate a connection to an unknown network, successfully granting internet access approximately 85% of the time. This connection process is accompanied by distinct and loud dial-up tones, described by witnesses as "distorted" and "unnerving."

SCP-[...]'s anomalous properties manifest when it is connected to a legacy desktop computer. Upon establishing a connection, the computer's security protocols and firewalls are immediately disabled, leaving all ports open and exposing the system to potential threats. Any malware or viruses contracted by the computer will result in the user experiencing corresponding cognitive and psychological symptoms, collectively referred to as "mind-viruses".

Mind-viruses vary in effect and severity, ranging from mild confusion and memory lapses to severe paranoia and hallucinations associated with the malicious software. The symptoms appear to be unique to each virus and can only be removed by utilizing SCP-[...]-A, the attached antivirus device. SCP-[...]-A is capable of scanning and neutralizing all known computer viruses and their corresponding mind-viruses with 100% accuracy.
Addendum A: Discovery
SCP-[...] was recovered from the residence of Mr. ████████, a computer technician, in [REDACTED], California, following multiple reports of unusual computer-related illnesses in the area. Foundation agents posing as health officials conducted a covert investigation, leading to the discovery of SCP-[...] and its unusual properties. Mr. ████████ was administered Class-A amnestics and released.

Initial testing revealed the unpredictable nature of the mind-viruses, with symptoms varying widely among test subjects. Research is ongoing to understand the mechanism behind the anomalous connection between the computer viruses and the subjects' cognitive functions.
Addendum B: Test Log
<Start of Log>

Test Subject: D-56789, male, age 32, with basic computer knowledge.

Procedure: D-56789 was instructed to initiate a connection using SCP-[...] and browse the internet for 15 minutes on Computer-[...]-1.

Results: Approximately one minute after establishing the connection, Computer-[...]-1 downloaded a file named "Conhozt.exe" without user interaction. The file mimicked the appearance of the legitimate Windows system file "Conhost.exe." Upon execution, the file deployed several other malicious executables, and the system became unresponsive. D-56789 reported feeling a sudden headache and a sense of confusion.

Within minutes, D-56789 began exhibiting signs of disorientation and paranoia. He claimed that he could hear voices whispering in his mind and accused the research team of conspiring against him using computer viruses. A full system scan using SCP-[...]-A neutralized the viruses, and D-56789's symptoms gradually subsided over the next hour.

Addendum C: Blaster Infection Test
A test was conducted to observe the effects of the Worm.Win32.Blaster (also known as Lovesan or Blaster) on a subject using SCP-[...]. The test subject, D-87654, was instructed to initiate a connection using SCP-[...] and browse the internet for 30 minutes on Computer-[...]-1. The computer was then connected to an isolated network, where researchers delivered msblast.exe via a remote buffer overflow attack.

Initially, the subject did not exhibit any noticeable symptoms. However, after 2 hours, D-87654 began to express feelings of affection towards an individual named "San," claiming that they had a personal connection with this person. The subject became increasingly agitated when questioned about the nature of this relationship, insisting that it was genuine.

Approximately 4 hours after infection, D-87654 started to vocalize criticisms of Bill █████, repeating phrases similar to those found in the msblast.exe executable. The subject became convinced that Bill █████ was responsible for their current situation and demanded that he "fix his software" and "stop making money". The subject's behavior became more erratic, with episodes of intense anger and paranoia.

The subject was allowed to remain infected for 48 hours, during which time their condition continued to deteriorate. They became withdrawn and isolated, refusing to interact with researchers or respond to questions. After 48 hours, SCP-[...]-A was used to scan and neutralize the Worm.Win32.Blaster infection. The subject's symptoms gradually subsided over the next 24 hours, and they were administered a Class-B amnestic to prevent any long-term psychological effects.
Addendum D: Computer-[...]-1 Specifications
Computer-[...]-1, the legacy desktop computer used in conjunction with SCP-[...], has been configured to meet the following specifications:
  • Operating System: Windows 2000 Professional (Service Pack 4)
  • Processor: Intel Pentium III 1.4 GHz
  • Memory: 512 MB RAM
  • Storage: 40 GB IDE Hard Drive
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX 400 (32 MB VRAM)
  • Sound: Creative Sound Blaster Live! Value
  • Network: 3Com 3C905C-TX Ethernet Adapter (disabled)
  • Modem: Connected to SCP-[...] for dial-up internet access
Computer-[...]-1 has been intentionally configured with outdated hardware and software to minimize potential interactions with modern security protocols and to maximize the effectiveness of SCP-[...]'s anomalous properties. The computer is not to be connected to any internal or external network except the internet and used for testing and research purposes.

Any modifications or updates to Computer-[...]-1 require approval from at least two Level 3 personnel and must be thoroughly tested to ensure they do not compromise the integrity of SCP-[...] or the research being conducted.
